Off the wall

Filed under: colmmacc, Exploring, New York 2005 — colmmacc @ 12:59 am

Not many photos from today, cameras are not allowed in the Fed, so didn’t get to take any there.

Wall St.

More movie inconsistencies today. The federal reserve vault looks nothing like it was depicted in Die Hard With a Vengeance, and it’s a good deal lower than subways run, but still a very cool place.

The Producers was definitely worth going to see, much better than I expected it to be. Tomorrow I think we’re going to try and find the Flatiron building, and we have an evening in Carnegie Hall of course.

Apple Marvels

Filed under: colmmacc, Exploring, New York 2005 — colmmacc @ 2:38 am

I’ve put up a few more photos covering our trip to the UN building, a few from the Empire State Building and some outside NYPL. Just to prove it’s really there, there are some photos of the Gilmore Girls.

The Chrysler Building, from the Empire State Building

We’ve covered a lot in the last two days, and the weather has been seriously hot. It’s hard to believe how much energy it can take to walk even just a block or two.

I’ve been finding that New York isn’t portrayed very accurately in the Marvel movies. Liberty Island, and the statue are nothing like how they are portrayed in X-Men. For a start the flame is much smaller, and there’s no wall at the edge of the Island, it’s a fence. Though the visitors center does have the pieces of Iron that Magneto is fond of.

Time’s Square doesn’t have a huge, pompous, upper-class turn-of-the-century residential building with a neo-classical balcony where Spiderman’s arch-enemy (and best friend’s dad of course) might live. Nor does Manhattan have an L-track which inconvienently terminates in mid-air. Can’t say I’m suprised.

Manhattan 360

Clipper and Downtown New York

The river boat tour was definitely a great opportunity for photos. Noirin is getting hers online now, as we watch all new Family Guy in real-time for a change. In the meantime, I’ve put 31 of mine up.

Sardi’s was great, and what Noirin didn’t mention is that we were 1 (empty) table away from David Hyde Pierce (aka Cecil Twiliger, or Dr. Niles Crane). Though the staff seemed more excited about this than we did.

Update: Noirin’s photos are online now.

First impressions

Filed under: colmmacc, Exploring, New York 2005 — colmmacc @ 12:02 am

Turns out Manhattan is a good deal smaller than it looks on Google maps, so we’re staying literally 30 seconds walk away from Times Square. It’s slightly surreal having a 20-metre wide bilboard of the Gilmore Girls that close, but Colin would appreciate it.

St. Patrick's Cathedral

In just idly and aimlessly walking around we encountered 5th, 7th, Lexington and Madison Avenues, saw St. Patrick’s Cathedral (a lot smaller than I imagined it) and we went into Saks, FAO Schwartz, The Disney Store, Central Park.

There’s a load of Musical instrument shops around the corner from us aswell, which be browsed for a while. I’ll almost certainly have a more detailed look over the week.

Digital Tyranny

Filed under: Miscellany, colmmacc, New York 2005 — colmmacc @ 1:03 pm

When the United States brought in the requirement for fingerprinting all non-nationals, I thought I’d never go to the US until they’d wised-up. Why be made feel like a criminal? Why have your fingerprints at the mercy of the US government forever?

However, due to New York just generally being a cool place I’ve always wanted to visit, it having a smoking ban (the hotel we’re staying in is also the only hotel in New York with a blanket non-smoking policy) and it being one of the places Noirin and I could agree on wanting to go to, that’s turned me around.

I hope it’s worth it.

We’re going to New York

Filed under: Miscellany, colmmacc, New York 2005 — colmmacc @ 12:04 pm

Myself and Noirin are off to New York, for a week, and this travel-blog will hopefully record our experiences and opinions of it all. We’re planning a hectic trip, all of the major sites and more. Well actually Noirin is doing all of the planning - but she’s far better at organising things than I am!

We’ll be staying in Midtown, about 5 minutes’ walk from Times Square. On our itinerary we’ve got such things as: Central Park, Liberty/Ellis Islands, HEAnet’s New York PoP, the Empire State Building, Grand Central Station, The SoHo Apple store, Broadway, a night in Carnegie Hall (seeing Bela Fleck!), NYPL, The Rockefeller, shopping and much much more.
